How to dress up

styling lessons from

I’ve baked most of my kids birthday cakes of the years. Believe me, this is not a brag. It’s just that my kids usually prefer homemade cakes than store-bought ones. So I happily oblige.

The thing is, I am not a cake decorator. Not even amateur level.

Over time, I’ve learned a few things that make my cakes go from plain to party ready, even with my below average cake skills.

Why am I telling you this? As I was putting the final touches on my son's cake, I realized the same elements that make my cakes pop can elevate your outfits too.

Here are 3 tips to glam up your next special event look:

1. Add scale: Just like I use a fancy cake stand to give my cakes a sculptural look, adding drama to your outfit is key. Think striking pieces like a fancy skirt, a chic blazer, or a standout dress.

This is exaggerated, of course but it portrays the scale and drama I’m talking about

2. Add a festive touch: Sprinkles on a cake scream celebration. For your outfit, a bit of sparkle does the trick. Try statement earrings or a dress with shimmering details to make your look extra special.

Altazurra nailed the drama and sparkle with the single gold detail

3. Add something personal: I bought these vintage inspired candles at Crate and Barrel years ago at their store in Istanbul. We have since used these candles for every single birthday. They add a touch of home to our celebrations. Your outfit should feel just as personal. Maybe it's a special accessory or a family heirloom. Whatever it is, make it your own.

4. Keep it simple: Did I mention I’m no decorator? So instead of attempting fancy piping techniquesI frost my cakes with a butter knife because fancy techniques aren't my thing. Similarly, keeping your outfit well-edited is key. Less is more. Think clean lines and simple hairstyles to let your outfit shine.
